Leonard's career spanned over five decades, with his earliest works being Westerns published in the 1950s.

Leonard's literary prowess extended into the realm of cinema, with several of his works adapted into motion pictures. Notably, he served as the executive producer for "Jackie Brown" in 1997, a crime film directed by Quentin Tarantino. Additionally, his novel "Out of Sight" was adapted into a film of the same name in 1998, directed by Steven Soderbergh. Leonard passed away on August 20, 2013.
