She graduated from the Department for Theater and Film Directing at the Academy of Performing Arts, Sarajevo. Žbanić gained international recognition for her feature film "Grbavica: The Land of My Dreams," which she wrote and directed. The film premiered at the International Film Festival Berlin in 2006, where it won the prestigious Golden Bear award.
