She began her career in the Riyueyuan Opera Troupe, learning Taiwanese opera under the stage name Xiao Chunmei. Liu's talent was recognized by Taiwan Union producer Lai Guocai and director Liang Zhefu, leading to her debut in the Taiwanese opera film, 'The Best Secret Agent' in 1964, where she played the role of Aili. During her two-year tenure in the troupe, Liu performed in over 30 Taiwanese opera films, showcasing her versatility by portraying both male and female roles.
