Over the following decade, Del Ruth advanced to Camera Operator, contributing to The Shootist in 1976.
By the mid-1980s, Del Ruth held the position of Director of Photography on major studio productions. In 1985, Del Ruth served as Director of Photography for The Breakfast Club, a coming-of-age drama set in a Saturday morning detention.
