Before entering the film industry, McGlynn worked as a practicing lawyer, having graduated from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. McGlynn is best known for portrayals of historical figures in films from the 1930s and 1940s. One of his notable credits is the 1936 film The Plainsman, in which McGlynn appeared as Abraham Lincoln.
