Butterfly Wu was born on March 22, 1908 in Shanghai, China. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Wu appeared in two notable Chinese films produced during the silent era. In Princess Iron Fan [1927], Wu portrayed the character 铁扇公主, a figure drawn from traditional folklore. This early work contributed to the film’s status as a landmark of Chinese animation and live-action hybrid cinema.
Wu later appeared in Twin Sisters [1934], playing the dual roles of 大宝 and 二宝. The film is recognized for its dramatic narrative centered on separated siblings, and Wu’s performance in both roles added depth to the story’s emotional core. These credits represent Wu’s documented contributions to early Chinese cinema, particularly within the context of the 1920s and 1930s film industry in Shanghai.
