About The One

On August 24, 1981, the newlyweds Larisa and Vladimir Savitsky stepped on board the plane following the flight Komsomolsk-on-Amur - Blagoveshchensk. 30 minutes before landing, the civilian aircraft AN-24 collided with another aircraft and broke into pieces at an altitude of more than 5 kilometers above the ground. No one was supposed to survive ... but a miracle happened. Larisa Savitskaya woke up in the middle of the wreckage of the plane in the impenetrable taiga. Now she herself had to create a real miracle, which only a strong-minded person is capable of.

Survival stories often lean heavily into spectacle, yet The One manages to ground its harrowing premise in an intimate study of human resilience amidst the unforgiving Russian wilderness. By focusing on the miraculous survival of Larisa Savitskaya after a mid-air collision, the film shifts away from typical disaster movie tropes to examine the psychological weight of isolation. For audiences who appreciate the gritty, visceral storytelling found in recent survival dramas, this 2022 production offers a stark departure from the polished polish of Hollywood blockbusters. It strips back the cinematic artifice to focus on the raw, freezing reality of the taiga, placing the viewer directly in the path of a woman forced to defy the statistical impossibility of her own existence.

The film serves as a compelling entry in the genre of historical survivalism, tapping into a fascination with real-life events that challenge our understanding of endurance. While the Indian film industry has seen a recent surge in high-concept survival thrillers like Manjummel Boys or Helen, which emphasize group dynamics and claustrophobic tension, The One provides a distinct Russian perspective on the same theme. It is less about the technical mechanics of the crash and more about the internal fortitude required to persist when every environmental factor is working against you. The performances, particularly from the lead, navigate the thin line between trauma and determination, ensuring that the audience remains anchored to the protagonist's fragile hope rather than just the debris surrounding her.

Viewers who enjoy character-driven narratives that emphasize atmospheric tension will find much to admire here. The cinematography captures the vast, indifferent beauty of the Siberian landscape, which acts as a secondary antagonist throughout the journey. It is a film for those who prefer their dramas quiet and contemplative, where the silence of the forest is just as loud as the violence of the initial event. By eschewing over-the-top action sequences for a slow-burn exploration of survival, the film positions itself as a testament to the iron will of a person facing the ultimate test. It remains a stark reminder that even in the most catastrophic circumstances, the human instinct to live can spark an unexpected, quiet victory against the odds.
